bought a portable microscope for $10.00 over 40 years ago. I found it very useful when I was in the truck tire business. I can place it on the tread of a truck tire and determine the direction of the wear pattern to solve alignment or other tire wear issues. For me, a typical homeowner, the microscope solves the timeless and all-important question: termite or ant! Of course, the images from my antique microscope are limited. Focusing on the insect in question took a great deal of time and patience, and at least a dozen of these villains were captured with duct tape. Still, your efforts will be rewarded when you know you don't need to call the exterminator. Pink frame Wi-Fi digital microscope is much easier to use. In comparison, the features are rechargeable so no batteries required, the subject is easier to locate, the image is visible without squinting, you can photograph the subject, it's easy to focus, and the image can be of more than one person at a time to be viewed as. Setting up this unit was a breeze! No major assembly effort, just charge the scope, place it in the stand and download and install the application. Note that the device broadcasts its own WiFi and does not connect to yours. While using the microscope, switch the connection from your home WiFi to the one in the microscope, observe the object, take pictures, and switch WiFi back when you're done. Insect subjects don't stand a chance!

This is great for getting kids excited about science! And since it uses their cell phones to work, it's a given for them!

Is that a $300 microscope? Absolutely not. And if you were expecting $300-level performance, you'll be sorely disappointed. But for $43 (current price), I'd say it's pretty darn awesome. Pros: It works and delivers incredibly clear, highly magnified images. Everyday objects like fabric, wood, leaves, hair, etc. get a whole new look. The app is relatively easy to use and connecting the microscope wirelessly was a breeze. Cons: The app isn't completely stable and I experienced a crash about every 15 minutes. Not a big problem and rebooting is easy, but it still happens. Also, the LED lights on the microscope cause a slight yellowish-green discoloration on many of the objects you are viewing. Image sharpness is pretty good, but color fidelity isn't. Even though it claims it's 50-1000x, I think that's wrong. The lowest zoom setting seems likely to be in the 50x to 100x range as advertised. The higher zoom levels are digital zoom only (so no higher resolution) and don't appear to be much higher than the lowest level. From my general impression it seems that 50-200x would be more accurate.

We got this so my family's kids would have something fun to do when they came over. My cousin's eldest is obsessed with this microscope. He looks at EVERYTHING in the house with it. Using and setting up with the app is fairly easy, although it took a while before we could connect it the first time. It might have been a small user error and a small app bug together. Because it's wireless, you can really take it anywhere and watch anything, which is loads of fun. The built-in LED lights allow you to spot darker rooms or objects, and the battery life is great. After using it for a full afternoon, it still had a decent amount of battery left for the next day. This makes a great gift for science minded kids or curious adults who are dying to know what their scalp looks like up close. It has withstood multiple falls and still works. The price is reasonable for the performance so I would highly recommend it. It's not for serious scientists, but it's great for your garden or young science enthusiasts!
